The peace deal in Swat appears to tacitly endorse the Taliban’s brutalities. The government and the military have surrendered the valley to the militants, who are responsible for the killing of hundreds of people. The flogging of a 17-year-old girl, which took place in Kabal district in January and surfaced only recently, is a stark reminder of where Pakistan is heading if the growing threat of Islamic extremism is not checked.

The Manawan Police Academy attack is further proof that the terrorists have extended their reach to the heart of Pakistan. Security officials believe that the brazen occupation of the Punjab training school by heavily armed gunmen is the latest indication that militants, once confined to the northern tribal belt, now have the capacity to attack targets anywhere in Pakistan.

The Obama Administration’s apparent intention is to concentrate on crushing Al-Qaeda and uncompromising elements among the Taliban, in the hope of being able to pull out militarily from Afghanisan, within the next four or five years. But a surge of US money and troops into Afghanistan is unlikely to bring peace to the worn-torn region.

After over two months in captivity, UN official John Solecki was finally released. The captors gave a 72-hour deadline to the government, threatening to kill Solecki if their demands were not met. On the appeals of Baloch political parties and leaders, including Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri and his son Nawabzada Hyrbiyar Marri, the deadline was extended – and help was found.
