In discussing the intersection of romance and politics in his novel, The Wish Maker, Ali Sethi says, “Love itself has a politics in Pakistan, since it is punished by both state and society (stoning to death, harrassment and arrest, the adultery and blasphemy laws, karo-kari and ‘honour’ killing). So it’s not as though you can write a romantic novel about Pakistan without being subversive.”
