Worthwhile article, but one has to wonder, does the Newsline staff not get a chance to talk to each other in their office? Or is such publicly incestuous back-and-forth the only means of communication between contributors and editors?

Really, Nadir? The Indian media? That would mean many things:

1. It could be another Indian conspiracy.
2. If the Pakistani media is not lazy, everyone in the media here really does hate Musharraf so much that they like it when he is under attack (even though this (mis)quote, arguably, costs the country more than it does him).
3. I am part of the lazy fraternity for assuming the translation started here.

Perhaps, you should just have my title and I can have one that starts with “former”.

Tazeen: At one point in the interview Musharraf said, “Arey bhai, suno.” I just love the way he speaks. He can be crude and condescending but also very intelligent.

Talib: I’ve been trying to track down where the misinterpretation originated. As far I can figure out, the Indian media ran the story and the Pakistani and international media picked it up from them. Of course, this doesn’t excuse any of them for not comprehending (either deliberately or through laziness) what Musharraf said.

P.S. Can I also get a cool title? Maybe Assistant to the Online Editor.

Thanks for doing this Nadir. This was so needed. As usual, the international media fails to do its homework and presents a distorted view of reality – that also nicely fits the West’s ongoing narrative (”Pakistan is a dubious partner on the war on terror and can’t get anything right”).
Of course, Pakistan must take the brunt of the blame on this media circus as people here provided the translation.
As an aside, we received a call today at the Newsline office from a senior Pakistani journalist who echoed Nadir’s take that the former general was badly misquoted. He had some harsh criticism for some of his journalistic colleagues on whom the West depends for their information.
So, I guess it is true: Pakistan is pretty dubious.

Oh I miss Musharraf’s interview … no one from the present lot holds a candle to him as far as tv interviews go.
