Nadir: I take your point ..even if they did manage to oust ZAB it would have been a similar case to what happened to Indira Gandhi in 1977..however there were two opposing currents that have always been the problem in pak history..the first is when the desire to oust the government becomes personalised, as it did during ZABs time (his personal animosty with people like Wali khan and Asghar khan is well known) which is usually a reaction to personally viciious attacks (like NS and BB in the 1990's), the second current is when the people in power desire even more power (ZAB wanting a presidential form of govt led him to rig the elections, and NS in 1999 wanting to become amr ul momineen) when those two currents collide you have a situation ripe for military intervention.

Takhalus: That was the point I was making. The ideologies and motivations of the nine-parties were so disparate that they had little chance of taking down ZAB without the army. That is why the PML-N should not try to get ANP and MQM on board. These parties have nothing in common and if toppling the government is their only goal, as it was with the NAP, they are setting the stage for an army takeover.

An inaccurate comparison, the NDP's opposition to a deal was more to do with it being the primary target of ZAB's wrath..( as in the hyderabad tribunal and the military operation in balochistan). People like Asghar Khan opposed the deal out of intense personal dislike for ZAB.

Also except for the NDP none of the PNA had a realistic chance in winning a province..and none individually had a chance of winning in Punjab. This contrasts with the PML-N which will handily win in punjab and has a realistic chance in NWFP in alliance with other right wing parties.

Yes partys tend to appease the army when the going gets tough ..rather then seek political compromise they find it easier to appease the establishment and right wing..
