Poll: The Brutal Murder of Two Boys in Sialkot

FB06-10The brutal public murder of two boys in Sialkot has shocked and angered an already hurting nation. Violence like this in the name of justice, however, is not new to Pakistan. Denizens of the North-West have lived through public beheadings and floggings at the hands of Taliban. Minority communities have been brutalised and traumatised by angry mobs accusing them of blasphemy. Police stage encounters to rid the streets of “unwanted elements” regularly across the country.

The Sialkot murders, however, seem to have ashamed and outraged civil society more than many other incidents in recent years. Many people are being blamed. While debating this, citizens and commentators are looking at the situation and wondering how could this have happened? What is wrong with Pakistani society? Why do people resort to mob violence so easily? Why do people stand by and watch injustice unfold in front of them? Is the lack of law and order the fault of the police force or the politicians and government machinery that controls it? Who and what is to blame for the uncivilised attitudes and corrupt systems that have become the hallmark of our nation?

What do you think? Who or what is most to blame in this tragic and shameful incident? Participate in the poll below:

What segment of our society do you most blame for the public beating and murder of two boys in Sialkot on August 15?

  • Sialkot police (31%, 157 Votes)
  • The crowds who watched but did not intervene (23%, 119 Votes)
  • A culture of violence (19%, 99 Votes)
  • Poor governance (15%, 74 Votes)
  • An ineffective judicial system (10%, 50 Votes)
  • Other (2%, 10 Votes)

Total Voters: 510

This was a case of mistaken identity and the two brothers were lynched by a mob because they were mistaken to be dacoits. However, the more important question is why the crowd took matters into their own hands. If you listen closely to what people in the crowd are saying, they are blaming these brothers for having killed an innocent man and his son earlier in the day. In fact, one of them repeatedly says that they killed a man who had just gotten married 11 months ago.

Why did the crowd take matters into their own hands? Because they do not have any faith in the police or the judicial system in Pakistan. If they did, they would simply have turned the suspected dacoits over to the police. However, eveyrone in Pakistan knows that the police will take bribes from criminals and the judicial system is not effective, so instead the crowd decided to mete out their own justice.

The unjust killings of these boys are against islamic shairah and against any human rights!!! every person stood there who did not intervene or stop these thugs are guilty of murder! the police who were stood watching should be tried for murder!!! in England police are sacked for walking past a crime and not intervening even when off duty, which is the way it should be…. Pakistan is a crooked society which has been pushed back to the dark agaes following recent floods. how will we recover now when the whole heirachy of pakistan is corrupt, the police are corrupt, the prime minister mr 10% zaradri is corrupt, judges are corrupt, the whole system is corrupt.

i feel sorry for the boys mother who will probably never get justice! the international needs to stand up and do something about this! if anyone is taken to caught over this i doubt anything would happen, the judges and police would be bought for less than £100.

the boys will get their justice if not in this life then definiately the hereafter!

when Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was put in fire. A small bird started collecting water in its small beak and kept dropping it in the fire. She continued doing that while others were acting merely as spectators. She was told that her effort will never put off the fire to which she relpied “I know that my effort will not put off the fire but on the day of judgement I dont want to be standing with the group of ‘Spectators’ rather I prefer to be standing with the group that tried to put off the fire” …i wish there was someone who have atleast tried to save them rather then spectating…!!!!
