FAQs about the Newsline and Tea Break Media Partnership

Newsline and Tea Break announced a joint media partnership in July 2011. Here is everything you wanted to know about the venture but were too shy to ask.

What is Newsline?

Newsline is an independent monthly newsmagazine that was founded in 1989. It was born of the refusal of a dedicated band of journalists to toe the line. As a journalists’ cooperative that remains unattached to any media group, the publication’s founding commitment to independence and honest reporting remains to this day.

While Newsline launched its original website in 2001, it revamped its entire online presence in 2009 with an interactive website. Now all the magazine’s in-depth content – featuring some of the country’s best writers, such as Mohammed Hanif, Maleeha Lodhi, Rahimullah Yusufzai, Ayesha Siddiqa and Mahir Ali – is brought online and enhanced with blogs, extended interviews, polls, photo galleries and multimedia material. Over the years, Newsline has been rewarded for its dedication to the truth with a slew of loyal readers and a series of national and international awards, including numerous APNS awards.

What is Tea Break and teabreak.pk?

Tea Break is Pakistan’s largest blog aggregator and social media platform. Its mission is to promote local content by providing a free media platform to express and opine. And clearly it is succeeding: as of June 2011, Tea Break had 3,000 registered Pakistani bloggers and a network growth of 72%.

A key part of that mission is to allow readers to enjoy their blog time by providing easy access to a diverse range of perspectives. This year, Tea Break streamlined the process even further with the launch of the third version of its online platform. Along with the website revamp, Tea Break is expanding the variety of content on offer, from blog posts in local languages to video and photo blogs. Tea Break is also known to play its due role in cyber activism, highlighting social causes that fail to be covered by the mainstream media. In Pakistan’s first blog awards, Tea Break was awarded for Best Blog Aggregator by “CIO Pakistan & Google.”

Why are Newsline and Tea Break entering into a media partnership?

Both organisations are looking for more efficient and diverse ways to get news and information to more readers in Pakistan and abroad. The goal is to enhance each other’s digital distribution systems as well as develop new media content covering current affairs in Pakistan.

As both Newsline and Tea Break are independent media organisations with different areas of expertise, bringing together Newsline’s content with Tea Break’s mastery of information technology makes perfect sense.

What types of things can we expect from this partnership?

Tea Break and Newsline have already started sharing more news and information with their readers, diversifying the content that each provides. Tea Break is now powering blog feeds across Newsline’s website, providing more options for Newsline readers and better exposure to Tea Break’s registered bloggers. Meanwhile, Newsline exclusively delivers the content for the “News” section on teabreak.pk, while there is quick access to the latest Newsline articles via Tea Break’s home page.

Building on the core competencies of both companies, this partnership will also develop more unique and timely content using current Internet technologies. Expect to see live blogging coverage of special events and online discussion programmes focusing on the pressing issues of the day.

How often will we see interactive coverage and events?

Starting in September, we hope to host one interactive online event every month.

Will there be a charge to view or participate in these media events?

No. All live event coverage and special interactive programming will be free to everyone with Internet access.

How will we know about these special online programmes: e.g. how will Tea Break and Newsline publicise them?

The best way to keep abreast of these events is to stay connected with Tea Break and Newsline on Twitter and Facebook.
